The Humming Bird garden
Book into any Costa Rica jungle lodge, consult your guide book or speak to the locals and one of the first things that will be mentioned as a must-see when you travel Latin America are the country’s exquisite Hummingbird Gardens. Throughout the country you will find portions of national parks and tourist attractions dedicated to this exotic bird species. You can choose to make a day of it and head out to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens or wander through Selvatura Park where you can view the hummingbirds from elevated walkways or participate in a canopy tour. If you choose our lodge as your Poas accommodation however, you won’t even need to leave the grounds to marvel at the wonders of a hummingbird garden. As a Costa Rica lodge, we take pride in our natural heritage and the hummingbird lies especially close to our hearts. Their names are pure poetry - like the Green-crowned Brilliant, the Buffon’s Plummeteer and Purple-throated Mountaingem. Costa Rica boasts 50 of the 300 hummingbird species that constitute the family Trochilidae, all of which are breathtakingly beautiful.
Here are a few interesting facts about the hummingbird:
- Hummingbirds are so named due to the trademark ‘hum’ their wings make as they fly.
- A hummingbird’s wings beat at a rate of 100 beats per second, making the movement near imperceptible to the human eye.
- The hummingbird’s tongue can be extended and is forked at the tip, which allows them to extract nectar and insects from flowers.
- The hummingbird is the only bird in the world that can generate power both on the forward and backward wing stroke, which accounts for the fact that they can fly backwards.
- A hummingbird consumes up to 850% of its own weight in food and water every day.
- A hummingbird has the highest metabolic rate of all the members of the Aves family and its heart rate can exceed 1,200 beats per minute!
No matter what Costa Rica accommodation you choose, you are guaranteed a beautiful adventure in our diverse country. However, if you would like to enjoy access to your very own hummingbird paradise without having to bother with tickets and queues, our lodge will be your best bet for Poas accommodation. |
