| Poas Volcano has much to offer tourists |
|
There are many activities in the Poas Volcano area. Poas Volcano is one of the most accessible volcanoes in Costa Rica and is such a wonderful area to visit because of its great natural beauty and spectacular views of the Central Valley of Costa Rica.
Taking road 130 from Alajuela towards Poas Volcano takes you past Doka Coffee estate where you can enjoy an informative coffee tour and get to taste some of the best coffee Costa Rica has to offer. The tour is only an hour long and is a perfect stop on the way up to Poas. Heading further up towards Poas Volcano the road passes through Fraijanes and Poasito. This route is lined with souvenir stores and vendors selling local produce. Poas Volcano strawberries are a speciality of the area. Muy Tranquilo is a very brightly coloured souvenir store situated half way between Fraijanes and Poasito on the main road leading to Poas Volcano National Park. The owner, Tavo is a fantastic host, offering free coffee and hot chocolate toy customers as they browse his excellent selection of locally made souvenirs and art. La Paz Waterfall Gardens situated beyond Vara Blanca on the road to San Miguel is an excellent place to get up close to rescued animals and also to see a fantastic butterfly breeding program. The waterfalls are easily accessible and the thundering waters will take your breath away. The obvious main attraction is Poas Volcano itself, with its huge main crater and bubbling sulphurous lake. The Poas Volcano National Park opens at 8am daily and it is best to arrive early to avoid the clouds that build up later in the day. The entrance fee allows you to enter for one day, so it is possible to exit and return later if the weather is not 100%. The park is very safe with a secure parking area where you can feel safe leaving your bags in the car. Poas Volcano is one of the most accessible volcanoes in the world and even allows wheel chair access to edge of the crater. Poas Volcano and surrounds has much to offer tourists and locals alike and is well worth the visit. |
